    Need you Canadians help

I'm in the CONUS and have a fellow in Canadaicon who is interested in a STEN kit that I have. Is it legal to ship if I weld up the face of the bolt and plug and weld both ends of the barrel? I have contacted the U.S. BATFE and they have referred me to the U.S.iconstate department. Any advice?

I may be mistaken but I think something like that would have to be certified DEWAT by the RCMP. There are certain criteria that must be met. Plus you need export permits from U.S. Customs to ship gun parts. The U.S. laws really went nuts after 9/11 as far as exporting firearms goes. Honestly, from what I know about it, it's probably not worth the aggravation. It's real tough for gun enthusiasts in Canadaicon to get ANYTHING out of the states now. You would think the U.S. government would relax the export regs. a little bit as this hurts U.S. businesses more than anything else. I would try U.S. Customs first and then the RCMP if you're determined but be prepared for some major B.S..

I agree with Mike Webb, it will be a big hassle. I tried once to import a machine gun tripod and gave up mostly because the consensus was that it would likely get siezed at the border for starters because it was a machine gun part. I played "phone tag" for about two days to try and get the permitting and finally gave up. Your interested party is better off to look here in Canadaicon for his sten.

In theory it is just spare parts.

The problem is that the Customs and the police seem to think that Canadians are mean and nasty people and so the official answer to just about anything is apt to be "no", no matter what the law might actually say.

A good lawyer likely should be at hand in a matter such as this. Only problem here is that lawyers are just SO expensive.

Your barrel and bolt, once altered in the manner you have described, ought to be OK as they are not really gun parts anymore. The remainder of the gun will be the problem. In Canadaicon, the mag-well on the sten is considered the machine gun (not the tube like in the US), so it will be seized by Cdn customs. As well, an unaltered trigger group will be considered as parts exclusively for a prohib, and that makes them difficult to import. The export rules on your side are even worse. With problems on both sides of the border, your shipment likely is not going to make it through.
