    Bridge at Remagen

Was watching "The Bridge at Remagen" the other night on Military Channel. Pretty decent war movie. Had a bunch of carbines in it. Funnily though, most (but not all) had adjustable sights and bayonet lugs, and a lot of them had 30 round mags. Even one that had adj. sights and 30 rounder was a nice high wood stock! I guess they just used what was available from the prop room. They stuck fairly close to the facts for a movie; I guess I can forgive a few technical inaccuracies - they had "Patton" tanks on both sides and no Shermans.... Guess you gotta use what you got .

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Most movies are for entertainment, not authenticity.

But there have been other threads on this forum that talked about peoples favorite Carbine movies. Here were a few I found.

My friend's Dad landed in Normandy on D-day ++ and when he returned to the US in the Fall of '45 with an NPM carbine had an adjustable sight added as well as a complete Quality Hardware trigger group. The type lll sight has only one stake. Another friend has a 6 digit Inland with checkered Inland safety, type 1 trigger housing pin and early mag catch with a type III Standard products hammer. At the time I examined it, I didn't check the staking but both carbines had type 1 barrel bands too so I believe both carbines were field upgraded.
We collectors really like the early featured carbines with flip sights and such but for a troop in the field, any improvement such as an adjustable sight, better hammer, etc were more of a priority. I would encourage any collector to think twice before replacing an adjustable sight on a carbine otherwise has early features as it might be destroying some of the history of that particular weapon.
