    Anyone know the origin of the name 'long tom'?

    , and which model enfield it applies to?
    ... and does the same question apply to poms being called 'tommies' in ww2?

    Thanks, it seems every kiwi and his dog calls them long toms and I'm well and truly mystified? cheers
