Reloading specs on a 145 gr tracer for m1g

hELLO; i AM TOTALLY NEW TO RELOADING BUT HAVE BEEN SHOOTING THE M1 GARAND FOR 30 YEARS. i HAVE MANY 1000S OF EMPTY CASES AND RECENTLY PURCHASED 1000 145 GRAIN APT BULLETS FOR RELOADING. i WAS GOING TO PURCHASE A LYMAN REAMER TO GET RID OF THE CRIMPS. i AM THINKING OF USEING CCI LARGE RIFLE PRIMERS AND IMR 4895 POWDER. mY MAIN QUESTION IS HOW TO GET ABOUT 2700 FPS OUT OF A 145 GR BULLET USING IMR 4895. IF ANY OTHER POWDER / PRIMER COMBINATION WOULD BE BETTER PLEASE LET ME KNOW AS i KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT RELOADING PERIOD.

You need to buy a Lyman reloading manual and read it completely before you go further. There are other manuals but Lyman is general and has most all components available in it. Others are specialized. To get loads from other people without consulting books is dangerous. Also the use of AP bullets is forbidden in many areas and tracer also. The combination of components are correct but you need to find out ALL the data from companies that have researched it safely.

I totally agree with you . AZ. does not have those bs laws you speak of though. In this case we have a 145 gr bullet and I think there is no commercial loading info available. I could load 10 bullets starting at 44.0 grains and work it up to 46 gr . travel 150 miles to a buddy with a cronograph ( looking for 2700 fps ) out of the barrel, or if someone already new the grains I could load some up and check it later. I am not an expert in this feild but would hope that none of these grain loads 44 to 46 would cause serious harm to me or my garand. Thanks for the info it is appreciated and when things turn around money wise I will be shure to pick up the book you mentioned.

You can bring up reloading data on line by going to http://www.data.hodgdon.com and follow the prompts. No book required. Or go to the web site of the powder company who's powder you use.

That would be Hogdon for the powder if you use IMR or Hogdon 4895

The site I mentioned has info for Hogdgon Winchester and IMR. Just enter your data. Just type in your reloading requirement and your computer will bring up the info. All the books are available on line.

Here's the NRA M1 safe target load data from the NRA hosted at Master Po's website. You can use the 147 grain data for your 145 grain bullets and won't see any difference the 2 grains bullet weight make. It's less than 2% lighter.

I just use 165 gr data since the bullet is so much longer. A longer bullet can a an effect on pressure so that's why I chose a 165 gr load to work from. I can't remember if I ever chrono'ed my tracer loads but they hardly ever light anyway and I most likey loaded them on the slow side.

The Lyman book is less than $30 and well worth every penny. The rest you you talked about sounds about right. I use either IMR or H 4895 and use 47 grains It's right about mid range as far as powder charges and works well with both my M1 and and my 03A3.

But first and foremost GET THE BOOK AND READ IT
