Whatever the copy, it still isn't an LP.08.

The pistols may get along in the same place, but I would hate to see you two in the same room!!!

There's no problem. Johnny is correct, but everybody here calls it an Ari 08. It's just the difference between theory and practice. Like there are plenty of P17s around in Mauserland, and nobody but me has an M1917. So I say P17 to be understood, after getting the "huh?" response if I say M1917.

    Dave,
Are you going to make me kick you in that sore knee of yours?
(BTW, how are you doing after your surgery? Did they at least give you some good 'happy' pills?)

Terminologies are what they are in different regions and become 'accepted norm', even if not correct. Sometimes collectors even come up with their completely unique (incorrect) terms that become accepted norm among collectors - and collectors here on this site come from all over the world, so the unique collector terms change even more.

Glad we're all friends here ultimately, and it's very rare to see anyone say anything remotely disrespectful or hurtful. Disagreements are quite acceptable as long as people keep it as if they would when in the company of each other in person.

I know Johnny personally and he's well known as a gentleman's gentleman in my area of the world as well as one of the top experts in just about all milsurps, and I feel very much the same toward Patrick even though I haven't met him (yet)
[Still hope to make it to Deutschland at least once before I croak - all those Germanicon classes to waste]

The one thing that does bother me is the Tomato and Potato deal.
    Correct - tə-ˈmā-tō / pə-ˈtā-tō
(At least I don't have to hear it when it's printed, but I just know they're thinking it when they write it)
How could they screw up the English language in such a fashion?

Harlan, English is already screwed-up enough as it is. You are the Moderator (Latin: one who moderates or cools down arguments). We stole it. I would call you the Boss, but we stole that, too: Baas (Cape Dutch, stolen during the Boer War as far as I can trace).

You are quite right as to terminologies. I'm always getting flamed on another forum for writing about the "P.-'17", being told that it is the US Rifle Model of 1917 and that I'm an idiot for using an incorrect term. Well, "P.-'17" IS the correct term....... in Canadaicon....... and is actually to be found in the WW2 manuals.

I live in a part of the world where we have kolbassa, holopchi and pettaheh for dinner after a nice bowl of borschdt. Or we go out for Jagdschnitzel with a lovely Kaiserschmarren for dessert. I have actually been in a Big City restaurant where they had BUFFALO CHIPS on the menu. Around here, we try not to step in them!

The thing that really throws me about Europe is that they eat snails and frogs, call good wheat "corn" and absolutely insist that Corn (which they call "maize") is unfit for human consumption. They have NO idea what they are missing, hot, salted and slathered with butter. On the other hand, we DO know what we're missing. (Yergh!!) We should introduce them all to Tacos, Texas Flamethrower style.

But haven't there been just some BEAUTIFUL pistols on this thread? I thought I had a good one..... then I looked here!

Good ones all, Smellie! Thanks for the smiles this morning - (and dried buffalo chips are also good for campfire tender, but we never eat them here either)

You're correct about the great quality of the people here and also some of the pieces of art they possess and share. The scope of this site has become completely amazing. Did you happen to read the new thread in the M1icon carbine forum where TWO different new members found this site searching, and each of them own one of the total of six prototype carbines the Bendix Company manufactured in a failed attempt for the carbine contract trials? AMAZING!

    Hyde Bendix Prototype Carbine

And, oh yes I've also been to places where some people look for the smallest thing as an excuse to jump all over someone and try to make them look like a fool in ways they're never do face to face.

Fortunately, there's nicer places on the internet where people are treated with common respect these days.

Back when someone would really say something really awful on forums to belittle someone and you know they wouldn't say face to face I sometimes replied with the following - (BEFORE I was born again as the well mannered moderator I am today, mind you)

"And Thanks for the attack from the fearless internet warrior"

(Badger will probably make me do moderator KP duty all week now)

Well at least we don't eat grit! We spread it on the roads in winter, so I quess we are all wimps, not being blessed with titanium nitride teeth. And although, in general, I find US spelling more logical than Britishicon, at least over here we can still spell arse correctly, and don't talk about kicking donkey.

Ari 08, P17, Nagant rifles - we have them all here. Just think of it as dialect differences, and adjust to the natives! After all, I have learnt to live with Germans talking on their "handys" about "life performances".

... Anyway, rusty.303, you said you would post some pics. Please put us back on topic and show us what you got!

... And did you do something about getting hold of the Lange Pistole 08 / LP 08 / Ari 08 (strike out that which does not apply). - Those things are worth serious money even when they are junk for shooting!

Just looking over old threads for fun and want to say I was just kidding about the severity of the comments above. I know everything at milsurps is above board and though we all take collecting and its knowledge seriously it is fun to throw some jocularity in on occasion. Also still waiting for those pictures.

The Germans were the ones that officially named the 8" barreled Luger the Lange Pistole 08, so out of courtesy I try to use the official term when writing. Around a casual gathering I freely use the collector term Artillery, but in many years of collecting I have never run into the term Ari 08. This may be akin to collectors calling a Winchester a Winnie, a Remington a Remmy, or worst of all a Springfield a Springer.

By the way, Southerners don't eat grit; they eat grits which traces some it's origin to the Germanicon word Grütze. If you grit your teeth, you are not putting grit or grits on them.
