.500 Nitro Express. Most definitely not.

The caliber is marked on the receiver: 6,5x57R.

This is an old Germanicon hunting cartridge favored for drillings (no that there are many of them in active use these days). As a cartridge for break-top rifles, it has a Pmax of 3300 bar, and certainly no more "oomph" than a Swedishicon 6,5x55 (3900 bar). The guy may have been an ace machinist, but IMOH he ruined a good rifle to demonstrate it.

Yes, I better be careful or one of those meddling moderators might get on to me and spoil my day.

That convoluted mechanical system for the rifle just reminded me of some of the things I've seen around these here parts of the world.

Sometimes design is hard to improve on, and our forefathers were mechanical geniuses in my opinion. Even though simple in appearance and function they put a lot of thought into them.
When you take into account what people like Browning and Mauser did 100 years ago and the designs are still the basis for almost everything, it makes you wonder how far we've actually come in our computer driven age.

I just wonder if the current caliber is all that signifcant to the story behind that oddity. It looks like a swap barrel gun for testing various calibers. I know that barrels are more tightly controlled in Germay and Austriaicon, but it's not all that uncommon on the other side of the pond to do one rifle with multiple barrels. Benchresters particularly seem to like this feature. But that's no benchrest rifle!

But WHY use, of all things, a Turkishicon Peabody-Martini??? They are teeth in a chicken-ranch in this country. We certainly don't have enough to wreck.

And I absolutely cannot fathom the purpose of all that extra metal under the basic action. Like, HOW do you improve a Peabody-Martini??? They were so close to perfect that even the Swissicon are still making them.

Guy must have gone to the Rube Goldberg School of Gunsmithing & Design.

I am lost, pure and simple.

Mayhaps that the receiver was basically junk and this enterprising soul gave it some sembalence of new life.

    Hey it could happen.
