Unfortunately in this land of Oz once upon a time even in military messes you could have a live firing museum peice hanging upon your wall in the mess. Then over time with jerk knee response and small mindedness taking over all items deemed to be a weapon either edged or otherwise (rifles) had to made fully inocuois, "oh the pain" upon seeing some of the fine and historic weapons that were butchered to make them safe.....Nothing was safe and in forwards backwards land here even museums such as the Ordnance museum at Bandiana had to have there weapons newtered. Luckily the Infantry museum at Singleton had a breath of sanity to a degree as most of there weapons were the only surviving examples in some cases, so they took them from display till a new purpose built building is built to display them.
So to the point of making something de activated, well atleast there is a surviving example of these items. No you cant shoot them, but atleast you can get the feel of them and the next generation will have an idea what they look and feel like. Maybe even if you want to take a leaf from the Ordnance museum unless you were told they were de activated you wouldnt even notice it.
