Harlan Garand Pic of the Day Chem Warfare

Chemical warfare was a very real threat for most of the war and American troops were given extensive use of the gas mask. Not only these soldiers are supposed to be protected from gas, so is there dog. Every regiment had a gas officer whose job it was to make sure all soldiers were ready to defend against gas attacks - and this frequently meant tossing tear gas grenades at the most unexpected moments. The reel of field telephone wire has been tied to the dog's harness so he can pull the wire to an advanced post without exposing the soldiers to enemy fire. The dog pictured here is acually the original TV star 'Rin Tin Tin'. The owner lent him to the photographers for taking these shots and obeying commands.
