    National WWII museum, New Orleans

If all goes as planned, I will be going to the WW II museum in New Orleans on August 4th, (a birthday present from my wife). Is the 3 D movie any good? What are the things you guys have seen that I should look for?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. I took my father (WWII Coast Guard vet) back in 2001 soon after it opened. They did not have all of the exhibits and features that they have now. My dad's highlight was the landing craft (Higgin's Boat) which was custom built for the museum from original drawings. My dad was a crewman on one for D-Day - he was tickled pink to stand next to it!

As far as what to see there? I can honestly say that the best thing to see is the look on an old WWII vet's face who is touring there. If you are not lucky enough to take your own vet, find one in the crowd and tag along... The stories start flowing, the tears start going and in an INSTANT they are back where they were 65 years ago....

    Just my two cents worth...

Please excuse another "Hijack". But if you want to see a "Higgin's Boat" in action, along with a P51 or two, and about every WII artifact in action. Try and make to this D Day re-enactment next month.

I live about three blocks from there and it gets bigger and better every year.[COLOR="Orange"]

I wish my dad, an Iwo Jima vet, was still alive. I lost him in 2003. I remember when I was a kid, about 1962, we went to "Cantigny Woods" 1st Division Museum in Wheaton, IL.( First Division Museum at Cantigny ). My dad had the strangest look on his face as we got in the half track, the DUCK, and other WW II vehicles. I was too young to understand.

And if you want to see the history of aircraft, head down south a couple of hours to Dayton and Wright-Patterson AFB. You will find the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. In May, a day before the display show in Wilmington, I spent over 6 hours in there and only completely saw WW1, WW2. Then had to rush through Koera, Cold War, Viet Nam and Space exhibits. Grounds outside are worth walking around also. Wish I had more time to spend there.

I'm lucky to live in N.E. Ohio. I'm 20 minutes away from D-Day Ohio and 4 hours from the Air Force Museum, plus only 2 hours from Camp Perry (CMPicon North Store). Plus we had the "Gathering of Eagles" [WWII aircraft: an annual event] 20 minutes away just a few weeks ago.

BTW, Jim, its Wright-Patterson AFB ( The Wright Brothers from Dayton) I think they had something to do with aviation, or was that homing pigeons? *LOL*
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

Jim, it's a pity you weren't able to get over to the annex where they have the Presidential Aircraft, up to the Air Force One that brought JFK back from Dallas. They are also in the process of restoring the "Memphis Belle" over there, I believe. They screwed us out of one of the shuttles, but we're supposed to get a mock-up the astronauts trained on. I guess the powers that be figured out there are more voters in California & New York than Ohio?
