A pic of my Dad cleaning his '03A3

Found this recently among some old snapshots. It's a pic of my Dad, who passed away in 2007, cleaning his 1903A3 at Officer Candidate School in 1944. He's the very last one on the left as you look at the photo.

Thanks very much for sharing your Dad's photo. I am sure there are many thousands more like it, hidden in family albums or old letters, that would help us all understand and appreciate what our forefathers went through to keep us free. Perhaps we all need to go on a scavenger hunt, and try to find these little bits of family history while there is anyone left who might know the story behind them, and commit it to paper or at least computer memory! I'm going to ask Mom (Dad died five years ago) if Dad sent home any pictures from Fort Benning and Japanicon - he was a Paratrooper Sgt. in both the 101st and the 82nd.

It might be a good time to show them to the grandsons and daughters of these men. Most kids today know or care less about "ancient history", and their schools are not teaching it. Perhaps a "family evening" with "Saving Private Ryan" or "The Great Raid" might help make it more real. Because ultimately they will be the custodians of all this - or they must might throw it all in the trash, if they are not taught some reverance for better people in a better time. CC

Wonder why there were still using 1903s at OCS in 1944?

    Great photo!
Alas, we do not have much from my Wife's Grandfather (photowise) and his time in WWII. However, a few years before he died, we were able to get him to sit down and tell us some "war facts". These were taped, and now digitized. By that time, many of the details were lost, in his memory...
