Thanks Bill Hollinger for informing me about milsurps.com. Recently on the G503.com military vehicle forum I read a critique, evaluation, and valuation of an M1 Carbile offered for sale. He claimed it was all original and offered it for $1,200. Bill responded with an expert appraisal and eval of the weapon and I was quite impressed. I also made a comment about my Winchester M1 Carbine originally obtained from CMP in the 1960's for $25 by the Veteran I bought it from 10 years ago. Bill was kind enough to inform me that if I wanted to learn more about my Carbine I should visit milsurps.com where he was a Senior Member and SME. Thank you Bill. I have now spent five hours on milsurp reading everything I can find and watching videos and also thanks to all who have posted here that enables newbies like me to learn and receive the benefit of your decades of knowledge. My Carbine shoots straight and true and I am very proud and fortunate to own it.

Welcome Bob. If you are interested, there are some very good books out on the M1 Carbine. Owning and reading them will teach you about the carbine. Most folks with just a single carbine probably do not spend the money on the books. They can run from $22 to $55 each. I would venture to say that all collectors have a library of some kind.

Thanks Jim with the suggestion about the books but I have a question. Didn't we all start with just one Carbine? I started with one jeep but now have five and wives are probably the same about Carbines as they are about jeeps. "Oh my gosh--not another gun--what in the world do you want all of those guns for? My wife whined this phrase when I brought my last jeep home and my 33 year old daughter said "leave my Daddy alone and let him buy whatever he wants, he has worked hard and deserves it." Needless to say she is very dear to me and always ran interference for me when she was growing up. Who else but her Daddy would be brave enough to lead two Girl Scout 7 day backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail when the other dads wimped out? At age 15 she found a nice silver VW Rabbit Cabriolet with a bad engine, shocks, brakes, and top for $400. She convinced me that we could put it back on the road as a Father/Daughter project. We worked on it together every night for four months and she learned a lot about tools and auto repair, including a good junk yard engine. Today she is a graduate engineer who can fix and do anything. She even has her own hand tools that she forbids her husband from using because he does not clean them and put them back where they belong. She is a shooter also and I may just buy her a Carbine. It would be a good excuse to get another one!

I guess I should have said those who only want one carbine. As for didn't we all start with one not necessarily. I bought three at the same time for $60 each back in 1976.
Funny you mentioned it. I was an honorary Girl Scout too. My daughter's troop went to the Sierra Nevada's. A couple Dad's always went along with the girls. Mine found a black Camaro when she got her license at 16 for her first car, she was driving the family Civic with her permit.
Back to the carbine. I think it's a good choice for a woman. And a nice way to continue bonding with your daughter.
