A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. That's an odd one. Bad news is there weren't any 1898 carbines made in the serial number range you have. The front sight is not original. The stock however is likely an original 1898 carbine stock, made like the 1896 carbine stock. I think they were the last ones made with the saddle ring as the cavalry went to the carbine scabbard vs the boot that the saddle ring was used for. The three holes for the scope mount are probably spaced for a Williams side mount. Natchez shooters supply still had some in stock last time I looked. The rear sight is a carbine sight, I can tell by the height of the ramp. There will be others come along that can tell you more concerning the stock.
