11-262 Garand Picture of the Day

A Canadianicon member of the joint American-Canadian landing force squints down the sights of a Japaneseicon machine gun found in a trench on Kiska Island, Alaska, on August 16, 1943. After the brutal fighting in the battle to retake Attu Island, U.S. and Canadian forces were prepared for even more of a fight on Kiska. Unknown to the Allies though, the Japanese had evacuated all their troops two weeks earlier. Although the invasion was unopposed, 32 soldiers were killed in friendly-fire incidents, four more by booby traps, and a further 191 were listed as Missing in Action. (LOC) #

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Thanks for the Aleutian campaign photos. My dad was on Adak with the Signal Corps. Important, but boring work. He arrived after the shooting, but still had to spend a winter in a tent until they built the barracks.

He got back to Adak as a tourist in the 90's or late 80's. The base had basically been abandoned in place.
Ed reluctantly no longer in the Bitterroot
