    Irwin Pedersen New and Old, to me

    I haven't bee on here recently with an "is this real" question, but today I was in a local gun store and I saw they had an Irwin Pedersen carbine. I was clearly a CMPicon carbine since it still had the hang tag with "G3" (service grade" on it. It was also marked "Bavarian Rural Police" and had Austian LGK markings on it too. Everything looked untouched except for the stock which had definitely been refinished and was very smooth and shiny. Price was $1765. Much as I tried to resist I had to buy it and bring it home. It has a IR-IP marked stock, a B-IP flip sight and a type 1A unmarked band. I know that the CMP was selling these with flip sights and type 1 bands, but since the stock was refinished I don't know what else was "augmented". So I would like to get your collective opinion as to whether you think they are real or not. While I am at it I already had an Irwin Pederesen. This was also a CMP, but from back in the 60s and in this case it came with a type 3 sight and band which I have replaced over time with what I hope are originals, which I would like checked out too. So here we go with pictures. First the rear sight of the new one

    Next the rear sight of the old one, which looks amazingly similar

    Next the bands. This is the new one it has 3 weld scars, but they are very shallow and faint

    and the old one

    Finally the stock marking, which give me the most concern. This is the new one. Note that while the IP is sideways the ordnance mark is not. It is an I cut. It has IR-IP and a sideways flaiming bomb in the sling well;

    The markings on the old one are almost too faint to read, but for completeness here it is;

    So what do you think?

    Thanks

    Howard

    Nice to find an IP in any condition. Based on the above photos, IMHO the flip sights on both appear suspect. I like the barrel band on the Bavarian, but not your older IP. As to the IP acceptance stamp, would have to defer to someone who may have one. Perhaps a picture of the entire stock and slingwell markings would also be helpful.

    The faint stock marking on the old one is S'G' - right? I can see differences in those rear sights that may, or may not be OK. The left side marking on my rear sight differs a bit from yours, and my sight base is a B-IP. - but who knows if they were all stamped exactly the same originally? My band welds are faint like your new one, but the "UP" on my swivel looks slightly different - it might be because of the camera angle on the picture I'm looking at of my sight - I'll check the gun in the morning. The Bavarian sure has a lot of gap between the band and the swivel compared to the old one - mine is about like the old one. I wonder if the difference is in the wood or the bands? My gun isn't an IP, just an early S'G'. - Bob

    On the IP marked stock where are the acceptence stamps located ( picture of the whole stock would also be nice ) and what is the serial number on your new carbine?

    Noticed the milling marks on the two sights are differant. First one they are horizontal, second one verticle.
    The second band has some pretty deep welds. JMHO.....Frank

    The IP stock , Oval or I cut oiler slot?
    Does it have a circled P proof on the bottom of the pistol grip?

    TIA,
