    WTK: Do I have a G&H Sporter?

I am looking at a sportorized 1903 Springfield Rifle. It has a barrel date of 1-38. It has been refinished and does have the Hatcher Holes in the receiver. It has a Griffen & Howe Dual Lever Scope Mount Marked: Griffen & Howe NY, Pat 231055 Oct. 13 1931. Mounted in the Griffen & Howe Mount is a Lyman Scope marked: The Lyman Gun Site Corp., Made in USAicon Middlefield Conn., Alaskan, US Patent 2078858.

There is also a Lyman Base Mount on the right side of the receiver for the Lyman Peep site.

What do I have here? I do not have this rifle in my possession so I have no pictures to share at this time.

    Any value here?

Griffin and Howe scope mounts were put on thousands of rifles. Without good pictures there is no way for me to say anything about your rifle. How is the base attached to the rifle? If you can see the screws and pins then Griffin and Howe did not attach the base.

I have taken some pictures and I will post them when I can. My son tells me it has a NM bolt, (NS) and the barrel does have a star under the bore. You cannot see how the G&H mount is attached to the receiver. This rifle appears to never have been modified. There is also a Marbles front site.

The Griffin and Howe mount appears to be professionally mounted could have been done by Griffin and Howe.

The stock, the bolt work and the bluing are not Griffin and Howe.

A nice little sporter with the very early Lyman Alaskan scope.

PS: Thanks for the great pictures.

Appears to be a Service barrel. Likely not a true Sporter rifle.

This same question and pictures were posted on another 1903 forum. One of the responses to that post said SRS records show the rifle in question was sold as a National Match by the DCM.
