Thinking about building a Nagant Sniper

Thanks, I'm both pleased and relieved with how it came out. I've never drilled and tapped a rifle before. As this was a $79 Dunhams purchase, I figured it would not be a huge deal if I messed it up. If the first hole didn't work, I was taking it to a professional. It was going to cost a minimum of $40 to get the four holes drilled, bit and tap cost me $11.

It was easier than I expected, drill cut through nicely. Just drilled at a very slow rpm with pressure and cutting oil. Used a hand drill which made taking care a premium. Easier to get off course with that than a bench press. I used the pin holes in the mount as a guide and it worked just fine.

Now I'm going to get very impatient for the bolt to get back.

There is one thing I want to point out, in the one video online discussing drilling a Mosin Nagant, the guy does not drill the holes for the pins. He says the screws themselves are sufficient to hold it in place. I have to disagree with that after actually doing it. The screws in this particular mount anyway have play in them within the mount itself. The holes are slightly larger than the screws. The screws hold the mount to the rifle, the pins are what actually anchor it in place. The mount does not move when those pins are inserted.

My bolt came back and looks great. I'll probably do some final polishing on it but the guy did a nice job. When I get a chance I'll post some photos of the bolt and the finished project. Now eager to get it out and test fire it. Probably wait for some warm weather to do that.
