42 Dot G33/40 Mauser Mountain Carbine

I recently purchased an all matching G33/40 mountain carbine for $350 and would like to know a true value for it. I tried 2 separate local gun stores and they told me between $400 and $750, while members of surplusrifle and gunboards told me between $1000 and $3000 and I would like an insurance appraisal value.

I picked it up at a pawn shop, it was sitting on the shelf when I went in to pick up a 1918 SMLE sporter I'm going to restore for my birthday. I passed on it and went home, looked it up on the internet and drove back to pick it up. Poor guys didn't know what they had, I was beaming when I walked out with it in tow. I was utterly stunned when I got it broken down at how lucky I really was.

Suggest you check out Rock Island Auction for some recent results in the US--I assume that is where you are, or are you in Canada? Looking at the photos it appears to be all matching, original in nice bringback shape. I would expect it would be worth anywhere between 1500 and 2500 (depending on bore, etc), but the values on these are very hard to track and seem to bounce around a bit. They do however seem to be "bouncing" ever higher, unlike most of our stocks and monetary investments!

Congratulations! That is one very nice piece of history there. Treasure it!

Put mine on the leading (German) auction, Hermann Historica a few months back. There were a few other 33/40s as well and they went for an average of 750€. Price seems to depend on the condition of the wood (cracks etc), the markings, whether the numbers match (only the bolt, the action and the stock were stamped) whether it´s been re-worked in any way and whether it still has the correct sight hood. A number of these rifles have appeared during the last few years from Norway, with Norwegian police and military stamps and this seems to have pushed prices down quite a bit. Have found that many/most of those I´ve seen have suffered from barrel erosion at the muzzle end (the flame is quite spectacular at night) and are therefore not all that accurate.
