My winchester 1917

I just read "Winchester 1917" posted by highpowered3006. My winchester has a s/n 2435503 the barrel is a "W" dated 4-18 why is my s/n lower but the barrel is 3 months latter than his? mine is also a mixmaster the barrel and action are winchester, the magiazine is eddystone, the trigger guard and stock are remington. I tryed to take pictures but I couldn't get them to trun out. can anyone help me with that?

barrels were made well before the action. they didnt date the action and barrel at the same time..
but when it comes to a rebuild, its anyones guess, from a repacement barrel to rebarreled by someone other then the military

I bought the gun in 1964 from a war surplus store, for $30, here in ogden i don't think anyone had a chance to change anything

I cut the stock down back in the day and hunted with it for years. It has killed many deer. I don't hunt any more so I decided to return it back to full military issue. The stock I just aquired happened to be remington.

Please post pics! How far out would you usually hunt with it? How far out was it accurate to with what bullets?

1918 to 1964 gives the military lots of time to refinish, restock, rebarrel, and shoot lots of stuff through that ol rifle.
90% or M1917,s have been through some sort of rebuild or lend lease program of some sort.. thats not a bad thing, just history.
most of the rifle sold during the 60,s were lend lease returns, the ones iv seen had lots of common wealth markings as well as an imported marking someplace on the barrel.

Most of my shots were around 100 yrds or less, most of the time I was the one in the brush. I used off the shelf ammo, federal 180 grain, I have a box of PMC 150 grain on the my shelf now.
My best shot was across a canyon. the deer was running up a open hillside . I was having trouble judging the distance and kept shooting low. He was approaching the top of the hill and I will not shot at a skyline. I put the elevation on “10” sat down leaned out over my knees, put the blade on his head and squeezed on off down he came. He rolled halfway to the bottom. It must have been my 8th or 9th shot because I was feeding them one at a time. When I cleaned it the bullet entered just bellow the ribs on the right side and lodged in the left shoulder. That was back when I could still see good enough to use the peep sights. “LUCKY” shot? Maybe but I got the deer. Nice 4 point (that is 4 on each side). I'll try to post pictures on an other post.

I use a picture hosting web sight to post pictures. I have found that Smugmug works best for me, but Photobucket and the others would work also. What is nice about doing it via a separate web site is that you aren't limited by how much band width your pictures use.

this is a test. My bigest problem is geting the close up of the barrel marking. The only thing on it are the winchester VP and the US inspectors stamps. The finish is a gray blue not parkerized. I'll see if one of my grandsons can help me.

Winchester M1917 numbers ran up to about 548xxx. 2435503 cannot be an original number. Typo, perhaps?
