mini scope mount for the Garand
I recently acquired a national match M1A with stainless barrel, a Troy Battle Rail, Trijicon ACOG scope, and folding trijicon night sights. It shoots very well! I'd welcome comment on that set-up (and related experiences), as it is entirely reversible back to the NM sights. On a related subject a close friend (also a member of this forum, Redhawk) recently suggested a mini scout mount for my Garand. I'd be interested in hearing if any members have any experience with this mount and it's pros and cons. Thanks, Skip

The CMP did sell what they called a scout mount it replaces the upper handguard. It works excellent and you can mount about any long eye releif (read that pistol) scope or any quick aquisiton scope on it (red dot, holo sight) One draw back is that they are somewhat heavy. It's been a few years but it was under a hundred bucks and took about 15 minutes to install with now real gunsmithing and it comes off just as easily.

The CMP mount was sourced from Amegaranges. They are indeed heavy, but work fine. There's an old thread on the subject from a couple of years back with photos- don't remember the title of that thread just now.

That might just be a way to go for a non collectable shooter...

Which 90% of M1s are, realistically. They're mostly collectible parts flying in formation.

Agreed, I just didn't want to raise to ire of those around us who believe ALL of them are great collector's pieces no matter what condition. I have a 7.62 here I may have to scout scope and try...

Regarding Hamour's scope on his M1
The scope on your Garand looks like a really good installation. I'm curious however, do you have some means of raising your stock weld to accomodate the scope? It looks like it might be low enough to not necessitate any elevation in the comb. I'd really like to see other's innovative means of raising the cheek position on the stock. I have used new car wax applicator pads (sometimes in multiple layers of several pads) held on with elastic wrist bands found at sporting goods stores. This has worked well on several scoped rifles I have, including the M1A with the ACOG scope. I used the pads and wrist supports to augment the the stock pads that came with the rifle to fine tune my alignment to the scope. Its been a satisfactory arrangement so far.
On another topic, I'm a purist on collectibles. I have a Ithica .45 in stock configuration that once belonged to a Lieutenant General (family member), former Surgeon General of the USAF. It's collector value far outweighs any other considerations due to it's pristine condition and history. However, I'll modify anything that I intend to shoot (if necessary, not often), primarily to enhance my ability to operate it more efficiently. I firmly believe that Garands and M1As were superbly engineered, and operator friendly. there have been improvements in accessories and optics that greatly add to the performance of the machinery we love to shoot with. I have only applied changes that do not alter the basic equipment and are reversible 100%. Stock equipment is often hard to beat! Garandiose

Grandiose, the scope is low using leupold low quick disconnect rings. The ultimak is also low. If you look at the pictures, you will see I had to remove the peep to avoid it getting into my sight picture. So the set up is low enough I use the same cheek weld as the peep requires. I like this set up a lot because of this.
