Both M1s have leather slings and on the bank there is a hand held radio and a folding shovel. What are the cans in the crate?

The 'cans' which are actually cardboard tubes with metal ends in the wooden ammo boxes hold fragmentation grenades. That is how the U.S. Military packs them for storage, shipping and transportation - or did at least through the Vietnam war.
