I recently purchased an M1icon Garand with a very interesting stock. The handguards and stock have drawing numbers. It has a long barrel channel, with a 38 stamped in it. Scooped clip latch, SA/SPG cartouche. The problem is it also has 2, 13/16th in holes in the buttstock. The stock and handguards appear well matched to each other. Is this a fake, or could it be an early 1940 stock when drawing numbers were being phased out and 13/16th holes phased in? Purchased on Gunbroker Auction# 270099165 if you want to see the pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It seems unlikely that the stock set would remain together after so many original parts have been replaced.

Additionally the condition of the stock set would be excellent for its age.

It looks to good to be true.

Also there appears to be a relief cut for the oprod in the rear hand guard.

Trying to figure out how to post pics. I went to the tutorial, but I guess I'm not very computer literate

    Pre WW2 M1 Rifle stocks

The drawing number on the stock was discontinue while the stocks still had the large over small holes in the butt. For a short period of time the large over small hole stocks were produced without the drawing number, this is in the same time period that the proof P had the serifs added.

Photos show an early stock converted to two equal size holes by using a wood sleeve and drilling out the small hole - this stock still retains the early drawing number. The photo of the drawing number is from an original stock.

Well, Thank You RCS for your pictures of a real SPG stock. If you've never seen one its hard to tell. I'll just be happy to have a nice looking garand with a fake stock. Thanks Again!
