1st Carbine acquisition

Guys, couple of quick questions,,, what would be the "correct" stock for this M1? Im guessing IO or HI marked? Hi-wood or low-wood? Should the recoil plate be marked? How does the recoil plate come out? I used a stripper on the stock last night then washed it down with hot water and its definitely looking better.

Cory, I think it could be either OI or HI. Should be highwood. Take out the recoil plate screw, sometimes they are tough to get started. Soke it first with something that will loosen it up and use a good gun screw driver. Start slow, if it's tight try and move it a little then more penatrating oil move it back and forth and it will start to come out. When it's out the plate slides forward off it's ledge and it's out. It may or may not be marked, let us know when you get it out.....Frank

Frank, It's marked AU so I'm guessing Underwood? Second question would be what is the difference between type 2 or type 3 recoil plates and which would be correct for my gun? A buddy told me under serial number of under 530,000 was type 2?

of the original recoil plate. I know that mine was so tight and lodged in there that I thought it wasn't coming out. Lift it out and that wood is etched. The plates always have lines in them and each is unique. If some part swapper changed it, it will look like a mess underneath.

It actually came out fairly easily, I think it was stuck a little due to all the shellac. As I said it is AU marked. Would like to know whether type 2 or 3 plate would be approriate for this gun. Or are you saying the recoil plate is "married" to the stock so to speak?

Dismantled a bit more today and found the flowing markings:
Op Rod marked PI
Bolt marked N14? thats all I saw.
Hammer marked LT-Q
Sear ? SW-SG

Got 2 coats of linseed on so far, looking pretty good just takes forever to dry.
