Korean Garands
I've read that the 86,000 Garands coming back to the US from Korea are going to be sold to "Korean vets and their families". Is there anything more specific known about how this is going to work and when it will happen?

Where did you read that? My dads a Nam vet and he just turned 80 in Feb. the Korean vets I know and helped at a veterans day event were all in there early to mid 80's BLESS THEM ALL the point I'm making is at that age who among them would even want to hold one much less shoot one? I know guy's my age 53 that think it's time to shoot something lighter. I know there are exceptions to every rule, I just find the statement rather odd.
I can see out of respect for their service and respect to their family members that is a way it makes sense. I was 10 when my dad went to war and when he told me he was going I knew I might never see him again and I remember crying uncontrollable for hours that night and worrying about him every day until he came back. So I see the family members aspect of the statement as the families suffer too when a parent goes to war.
This thread started with one thought and changed into another. I must have a split personality. You do not. Yes I do.......... any way what say you?

1st what constitutes a "Korean War" vet. ? Cease fire was on July 27 1953. The Korean Service Medal was awarded until July 27, 1954. Those that served in Korea after July 27, 1954 were awarded the Korean Defense Service medal. If there refering to those that served during the war, (June 27, 1950 to July 27, 1953), you are talking of vets that are at least 76 years old. I doubt 86,000 would be looking to buy a M1 rifle.
But really, you can be sure that a major gun dealer that imports these rifles will be selling them to anyone.

This is what happens when newspaper reporters have too much time on their hands, & not enough facts to write a story.
Korean War vets have had the same ability as any other vet to buy M1 rifles from CMP, simply by submitting a photocopy of their DD-214. So, it makes no sense to say that these rifle would go to Korean War vets. CMP DID have an outreach program to give a small quantity of M1 rifles to WW2 vets, but there's been nothing said about giving rifles to Korean War vets.
The critical factor in this deal is whether or not the US government can convince the Korean government that these rifles were Lend Lease guns, which would mean the Koreans would have to GIVE them to the US government, or if they were purchased by the Korean government, which can now sell them to an exporter if they want. Apparently there is little documentation available.
If these rifles are still US Property, they will go directly to CMP, which will process them in the same way as the Greek & Danish returns, & sell them to individuals. If they are not, they will be sold by Korea to an exporter. However, current US law prohibits importation of surplus US military firearms & parts (with the exception of government agencies, such as CMP); my guess is that the rifles would then to sold to a Canadian importer.
Of course, this may all be moot. If these rifles are in the same poor condition as the majority of M1 carbines imported by Blue Sky in the '60's & 70's, there will not be many folks who will want them.

Umm their not coming
I read that Obama denied their importation and they were to be destroyed, the source was the NRA. A rather reliable one. I am sure we are talking about the same rifles.
