    Inland barrel question

I talked to a guy at a gunshow yesterday about an Inland that had belonged to his grandfather. The story is that the grandfather had been a paratrooper in WWII and his carbine was a 5.5 Inland and originally had a paratrooper stock. He was asking about value and looking for a repro paratrooper stock for this carbine. He knew that a bayonet band had been added and the stock had been changed. He is positive that the barrel is marked Inland and it has a 1948 date stamp. Is this possible? I asked if it might be '43 instead, but he was positive it's marked '48. He might give me a call and have me look at it in person. What do you guys think? Thanks - Bob

    I don't think such a barrel exists.

Didn't BrianQ , ChrisA, or some of the other most notable carbine gurus note that some Inland barrels were found with the wrong dates stamped on them?
As in stamp numbers being mis-alingned.
Maybe one will chime in here.
I have too much company here now to look thru the old CC newletters.

I'll do some searching on the CMPicon forum and see if I can find anything. I didn't get the guy's name or number, but he took my phone number and if he calls and arranges a meeting, I'll try to photo the barrel stamp. Thanks, Guys! - Bob

I remember (in a senile moment) that some 1943 barrels appear to have been dated "48" BUT I think they were Underwood barrels. It was an issue with the roll stamp. But I do not have a reference, just my memory.... for what that is worth.

Inland barrels were not miss dated as were some Underwood barrels. Some Inland barrels not have the month date on them but did the year. If I remember correctly this happened at least twice during Inlands production. Once in 43 and once in 44 in the August/September time frame.

I don't think I have heard of any Inland post-war barrels. The only post-war barrels I knew of before seeing the above Underwood were the SA-marked ones and of course the infamous Herlos. It does stand to reason that the gov bought some spare barrels after WWII because the Carbine was in-service for some time after Korea. Phased-out around 1957, it remained in-service with NG units for many years. Underwood makes sense too because they were one of the major 1949 rebuilders.
