    Weight of empty brass?

Would anyone know what the weight of an empty piece of .30 Carbine brass is? I just comitted to 20lbs. of once fired, resized and deprimed brass. Just wondering about how many pieces that might be. The price was right so I'm not concerned about the deal, just wondering how many I bought.

I know there will be variations from piece to piece, just an 'about' would be close enough.

    Thanks.

    Holy cow!

Thanks for that. If it is that many I'd be pretty thrilled. I gave the guy $32 for them, basically the scrap price. I'm assuming he isn't dead on with the 20lbs and probably included the weight of the box, but even if it's 1K rounds I'd be just fine with the deal. He said the box is 5" x 5" x 14", not sure if you could get that many in a box that size or not.

    Thanks again.

    Great Jim,
Now we have to figure out the weight of a missing primer to adjust the count.
Slow days can be funnnnnn .... Hey it's snowing here Oh Boy!!

    Cheers,
    Charlie

Reload, Sounds like you did just fine. Be sure to look all over closely. Check the lengths, I like the middle ground with case length @ 1.285.

    BTW- Go Blue!

Well as long as you're doing that, may as well subtract the weight of the box and assume a percentage of error on his bathroom scale.....

Snowing on and off here too. Supposed to be 70 and storming on Sunday, good day to sit down at the reloading bench.

    Reload,

What do you use? I currently have a Dillon RL550B. Thinking about getting the XL650 for the extra station.

I'm a Lee guy. Yeah, I know, I've heard it all before. I've had their single stage, turret, Pro 1000, and the Load All. Right now I'm running the Loadmaster. I have to say for all the bad press they get, I've never had an issue with their equipment. The one time I had a problem was because a distributor sent me a machine that someone else had returned with damaged parts. It was sold to me as new. I called Lee, they sent out everything I needed no questions asked.

The 650 is a really nice press. I believe that one comes with the case feeder, correct? I don't recall all the features. Does the 550 index or is it manual? Pretty sure the 650 is auto-index. If so, that's a huge step up.

The Loadmaster has 5 stations. I like using it for applying a taper crimp to my pistol rounds. I shoot a lot of hard cast lead. It's cheap and as long as you keep your FPS within reason it doesn't strip. I typically tend to load down for older guns anyway. Take it easy on the old girls. I'm looking into some cast for the Carbine right now, the guy who supplies my other lead has molds. Not sure of the price yet, but should be cheap. He does .380, 9mm and .38/.357 for $30/500, .45 is $40/500. I expect the 110gr Carbine to be about the same as the .380's, maybe less. Right now I've got it figured around $6.75/box of 50 using CCI primers and 12 grains of Alliant 2400.

They do now make a case feeder for the 550, but no auto index. Two reasons I am looking at a 650. Thanks for the info.

Jim, what kind of loads are you putting together for the Carbine? I'm looking around for a nice plinking round, something easy on the gun. I found a recipe for 10.6gr of 2400 with a 110gr LRN. Supposed to be about 1550fps, which is just fine for punching paper as along as it's accurate and cycles the action. The not to exceed is 12gr., so there's a nice window to muck around in and try to find the best charge.

    Any favorites you have?

I found a specification for the Military brass cases in some notes on my computer. Weight is supposed to be 71 grains with a variation of -6 grains. If I figured it right, Jim's .15 oz measurement would be approx. 65.6 grains (within Mil. specs). My guess is that the box will have about 1900-2000 cases in it, depending on the mfg. Use of lead bullets in the carbine can be a pretty hot topic. Some swear they never had a problem - others say it will foul the gas system. That shouldn't be too hard to "fix" even if it does. - Bob
