Those of you who shoot cast lead bullets through your Enfields

How do they shoot? Is there a precast bullet that works particularly well in the Lee-Enfield and do I need anything beyond regular reloading equipment to load them?
I don't want to get into casting bullets at least not yet but I would like to give them a try.

Cast bullets can group very nicely IF they are well-made AND fit the barrel. The problem is finding a commercial source that can meet both criteria. Unless you have access to a custom caster who can produce near-perfect bullets dimensioned for your barrel, finding any that perform really well is strictly by luck. You can still have fun plinking at short range with ill-fitting, crude bullets - but fine accuracy is unlikely.

Ideally, cast bullet nose is just slightly above bore diameter (land-land) while base section is sized to fit throat diameter (generally .001"-.003" above groove diameter). If the base is slightly under groove diameter, we can sometimes get good performance, especially at relatively low velocity. If the nose is too small, however, the bullet will probably yaw in the bore and fly erratically.



In addition to standard reloading equipment, cast bullet loading requires a neck-expander of appropriate diameter plus something to flare the case mouth so bullets can be seated without being "shaved" in the process. The Lyman "M" die conveniently performs both functions.
