How common were these items in actual use? I've never seen a picture (wartime or otherwise) depicting this case being used.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. They are also the latest lot of repro's being made in India. The quality of the webbing looks repro to me, but all the ones I have are Canadian icon

and in some items the Canadian webbing is of much better quality than UK icon

issue.

I guess I need to get out more, that's the first repro of a soft case I've seen. I have a few old ones I use to transport rifles to and from the range.

Has anyone worked out what the large pocket in the originals was for. It was far too big for a cleaning kit....... I always thought that maybe a tent and a groundsheet would fit!

I was always told it was for the breech cover. And why do some of them have hooks for a sling and some don´t?

None of them had sling attachments and if you see one with some kind of sling it's been added post-service. A great many have been so modified. For many years it was about the only type of gun case you could get here and all sorts of extension snouts and gussets were added to them to make them accept other arms.

I'm sure I won't be the only one to disagree with Mk7 about then being made without slings............
