    Pattern '18 Telescopes

A few years ago some forum members were reverse engineering the drawings to make spares for the Pattern 1918 telescope. Was there any success with this project?

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Hi Brian, I remember that. I think the Australianicon contingent were the prime movers.
I had the oculars made and soon sold out. I also had the OG's made. There was some discussion that the focal length was a few mm's out but had them checked on a calibrated light table and certificated as exact (for F/L and glass spec) and still have a few left if anyone is still interested. But once they're gone I won't get any more done

Added later.... Someone contacted me about needing a new range lead screw if anyone back engineered such a beast

I confess. I was involved in a small way and only on the periphery.

I offered to produce CAD drawings for historical or reference purposes with what dimensions I was able to verify. Not a weekend project even with AutoCad or TurboCad I have both. I partially completed that task when I was confronted with a few significant dimensions I was not able to confirm, and a few other, personal and family matters intervened. I still have what was done, and can continue the task now that I have more free time. I will emphasise that the drawings would be for historical or reference purposes as many of the original drawings' dimensions, from memory are incomplete, and I don't have a Patt'n '18 to strip down to measure.

For anyone interested one sold for 520 pound at scotarms the other week, you need to add 22% to this for final figure, in needed some TLC, but it was complete with the dovetail mount.

Thanks Simon, I already have access to the drawings so no worries. The problem over here is that no machine shops will do the work unless it's a huge production run and I simply don't have the resources or need of that. I ran into the same problems trying to get BSA No.7Mk.1 parts done. I had my original parts out of the rifle and on loan to different machine shops for five years with no affordable result. I finally gave up and put the parts back in my rifle so I could enjoy it again!

I'll have to look. Give me a day to go through the files - hard and computer.

Simon, any and all reference material is humbly and gratefully appreciated. I would truly appreciate a scanned copy of all you have if you are willing.

Brian, Have you considered contacting any 'model engineers' - you know the blokes who build scaled steam engines and minature aircraft engines just for the challenge and the fun of it or any retired tool and dye makers? Someone amongst them might be interested in doing a small run for remuneration.
