Markings Question On AN 13 Percussion Conversion

I recently acquired a Frenchicon AN 13 that had been converted to percussion at some point. I have been unable to identify one of the markings, a Crown over G that appears on most parts.

The pistol was produced in 1814 at St. Etienne, as noted on the lock plate, and there are letters impressed into the stock in several places. I am wondering if the long line of letters on the stock near the side plate indicates the location of the percussion conversion, but I can't make it out well enough to research.

There is also a Crown over R on the trigger plate, which I think is from re-proof when the conversion was done.

Thanks for any help or ideas in deciphering these markings.

    Jim

Both the "Crown" over "G" and the "Crown" over "R" that you referred to are inspector's marks, neither had anything to do with proofing the gun's barrel. They are inspector's markings identifying the inspector who approved and passed the marked part for use in the manufacture of the gun.

    Thanks for the info.

Since acquiring this pistol I have been researching and looking at all the photos I can find, and there was no crown over G in any of them. Most had more markings than this pistol. I was able to find other inspector marking references, but no crown over G. I was beginning to wonder if this was a proper marking for an AN 13.

Here's a converted 1822. I'm thinking that your conversion might not have been done by the Frenchicon military due to the crude hammer and drum. But that's just a WAG!

(And, yes, Patrick Chadwick, it's still yet to get range time...)

My guess is that the "crown over letter" marks are pre-1877 Belgian inspectors marks, and thus agree with jmoore.

Good grief! I never said a word, I was halfway up an Alp at the time.

But with all those markings, you don't need to shoot that one, you can just sit down and read it
