Novice question: Difference between MK III and No.4 butt stocks
What are the differences? I can't tell from photos.
Thanks for the assistance.

In truth, they were both interchangeable between the No1 and 4 rifles in UK Military service so you'd often see a No4 with a butt marking disc hole patched but the giveaway was the small recess in the top, front, left side for the locking bolt - the outer part of what you call the safety catch that you might have to modify slightly to fit. The butt socket might have to be altered slightly as might the butt plate area to suit. But as I said, so far as Armourers were concerned, they were interchangeable. I can already see the concourse collectors perishing at the very thought! But that's life in the Armourers shops

They must be, since my SMLE Mk.V wears a Savage No.4 Mk.I* buttstock! Hopefully I'll get that sorted out soon.
