Just turned one down because I thought $500 was way too high.

Dont know what the prices are like normaly down under but am trying to keep a eye on them in case we up root and make the move, a recent Jungle carbine was advertised on Guntrader for 300 pounds, but there seems to be a few trying to make a few more on the bayonets at present here in the UKicon, was at the Birmingham International Sunday just gone, to pick up a few items from Roger Payneicon and to line his pockets with silver, but dont think that amount would stretch far in his retirement fund !! ( but a big thanks to Roger for the bracket, and for sorting through his timber yard)

A quick look round the rest of the fair nothing realy caught the eye apart from one gent asking daft prices for run of the mill 1907 & 1888 bayonets, IIRC prices were around 120 pounds for the 1907,s and 140 for the 1888,s at least Dick Turpin wore a mask !!

The thing that did interest me was a 1888 bayonet marked to the manchester regiment, but the blade was a bit worn... again the price well over the odds, plus Roger had cleaned me out, but it was fathers day and the Daughter had a big smile for me when I got back home, unlike her mum she was not concerned with what I had spent....

Are you planning to head down under? Stock up on your rarer rifles. No4's in grease, No4(T) and Enforcers. Because supply is limited locally, prices can very very high compared to USAicon and UKicon. As issued No4 and No1 mk3 are more freely available so prices are more reasonable.

http://www.usedguns.com.au and Firearm Sales - New and used guns for sale including pistols for sale and rifles for sale will give you an idea of local values for the less rare rifles. Australianicon Arms Auctions past auction prices will give you an idea of the market value of the rarer rifles. '+alt+'

You will need to work out which State you are moving to as firearms are licenced by State Governments and there are small differences in laws from State to State.

Generally you need to be a member of a recognised club or have permission from a land owner to be licenced for a bolt action rifle.

Two main Associations for Club Shooters in Australia. National Rifle Association and Sporting Shooters Association of Australia. See their websites to get the rundown of the requirements to be licenced.
    NRA of Australia
SSAA - Sporting Shooters' Association of Australia

If you want to work, move to WA. We have record low levels of unemployment, very high wages and good ranges.

    Cheers

    Paul

    Paul,

Thanks for the info much appreciated, Been thinking of it for a while, NZ ( have family there) is my first choice then Australiaicon, its more to do with bringing up the little one, as for points etc I,m not too bad as my job is on the short list, but the boss has been offered a place here at University to study veteneriy science so its a bit of a catch 22, if we wait till she does the course my age will go against me, but she is a few years younger so could go out on the back of her qualifications in the future, I can live anywere, as long as the beer is cold, there is Sky TV, they have cheese and onion pastys and you can buy an Enfield.

Both WA and NZicon are great spots. Very different, but very liveable in their own way.

Gets a bit colder in NZ and a fair bit hotter here.

Vet science courses can be a bit hard to get into out here.high demand and only a few spots.

High demand here for any technical trade, especially in the mechanical areas.

The WA mines need something like 30,000 additional employees that just dont exist locally.

NZ might not have the strong economy but it does have one huge advantage.

And I mean huge.........you can own and shoot a Bren, Sten ......pretty much whatever takes your fancy. And their cheap.

    Paul,

Have been to Aus/NZicon several times, was working in WA for around 4 months back in 95 was contracting (Mech Engineer) on a few shutdowns on the kiwana strip (think that was the area) I was based in Rockingham near Perth also worked at the power station in Collie.

Work dried up and I had a few offers to go north to the mines, but decided to go back to sea.

Last time I was there I was on a box boat and did the major ports of Aus and NZ. I would go tomorrow but her indoors needs convincing, just have to wait till she finishes her course, first and see what pans out.

RJW kindly give me a rundown on the Firearms law in NZ and procedure etc for ownership.

Not quite correct, you cannot fire a Bren, Sten etc in NZ unless you have what is known as a "theatrical licence" which is for making movies & re-enactions & then ONLY blanks.

NZ has a basic firearms licence that covers all "sporting arms" you can get "endorcements" on that licence to own/fire certain types
B, Pistol: allows ownership & firing, limited to 12 handguns.
C, Collectors: allows ownership of pretty much anything but NO firing.
    D, Dealers: self explanatory.
E, M.S.S.A.: (Military Style Semi-Auto) allows ownership & firing of SLRs, AK47s, AR15s etc in their original configuration.

B,C & E require permits to purchase plus additional security etc
When it comes to purchasing 'A-cat' firearms (which covers the SMLE etc) you can walk into a gunshop, show your licence, pay & then leave with the rifle, no need to inform anyone in authority & no restriction on numbers owned.
I can be back at home after a auction, posting my latest purchase for all to see, within 4 hours of bidding & its a 2hr 20min drive home.

Im not sure its a new high water mark one sold for 2500 three years back followed by a couple around 2300. These were still wrapped. At around the same time some very minty lithgows sold for about the same money. I think we all had a little more money in oz back then. I've stopped looking completely for now.
