Aperature sizes in the Mk 1 sight
What are the aperature sizes in the Mk1 rear sight for the No4 rifles. Mine seem awfully big and Im wondering if it has been drilled out.

I haven't got one handy but at an experienced guess, I'd say that anything much over 3/32 has been drilled out, possibly to fit an adjustable iris type eyepiece

The "Battle Peep" (sight leaf folded down) is pretty large. IIRC, about 0.125" But it's been a while since I measured one.

Somewhat crudely with a digital caliper about .105 - .107"

There are examples of small and large diameter Mk1 battle sights. The larger diameter hole was developed for faster sighting in dark (Jungle) conditions.

Measured several this weekend that ran about 0.195"-0.200"!
The other peep size is as Peter Laidler noted, running mostly 0.095".

What aperture size ARE you refering to PTF? The battle sight or the leaf sight?

Peter: Gee I hope Ive got this correct as this Enfield stuff is new to me. I have a Mk 1 backsight on my 11/53 dated No4 Mk2 (irish contract per the s/n) with an aperture of the battle sight that is about .2 in diameter. Yes 2/10" of an inch... seems out of spec. The sight has the letter F stamped on the "ladder" , "slider" with a aperture size of about .1, and atop of the knob of the height adjusting screw which has a faint coating of Suncote (sp) on it.
Not untill throughly cleaning the rifle, that I asked about in my prior posts, did I find that the tiny backsight pivot pin retaining pin was missing. This has all lead me to think that this is not the original backsight.
I took the rifle out this past weekend and using ppu 150gn SPBT ammo found that shooting at a NRA SR target at 200 yards , prone, slung up ( I shoot CMP and NRA competitive matches) with a 6 oclock hold the backsight needed 20 clicks up of the "slider" (550 on the scale) from the "slider" being bottomed out to hit the targets 10 ring. The rifle grouped well.
The front blade is marked *015. Its not a + or a - that I can tell. There is a large gap between the bottom of the blade dovetail and the dovetail cut of the front sight mount. The front sight "mount" is marked 2H on it rear sloped side. It does not have a grub screw. Is this rifle s/n suppose to have a grub screw "split" type mount. I'm also wondering if the blade is from a Sten gun... if I have the spelling correct.
Brian Dick is helping me out with replacement blades but after poking around the 'net Im wondering if the front sight assembly may have been changed out.
I'ld like to get the sight setup so that at 200 yds the back sight is set the NEAR 200 yards scale mark with the correc sights for this s/n rifle installed. I know the sights are for the mil-spec ammo but I would think that I should be a little bit closer to the 200 mark than the 550 mark. I'll be handloading for the rifle latter.
Any idea how many MOA each "click" of these sights are worth?
Thanks for any help,

Each click is ~1" at 100 yards, close enough to 1 MOA for practical purposes.
My "Irish contract" No4 Mk2, dated 12/53 has no provision for a front sight tension screw. Others might be different.
If you are using a 6:00 hold on the SR target, please note that the sights were originally designed for a center hold with Mk7 ammunition and it takes additional elevation to compensate for the 6:00 hold - and may take still more with different ammo, especially with lighter bullets that leave the muzzle earlier in recoil rise than Mk7. If you intend to continue using a low hold and light bullets, you might either accept the additional elevation requirement or install a shorter front sight.
It's also possible your rifle's bedding needs attention and/or your sling is too tight. Do you know how to check forearm tip pressure?
Isn't the size of the battle sight aperture pretty immaterial if you aren't using it?
The black paint is called "Suncorite".

The first Savage rear sights had a larger hole, perhaps these sights do have variations?
