Does that large ring just fit over the flash supressor and hang loose? Or is it just spaced so it just goes over the front of the supressor?

The large diameter ring slips over the first 3/8" of the flash eliminator

Yes, it is a surprisingly tight fit. I usually have to give mine a tap with the heel of my hand to get it off.

You're right! Some bayonets were VERY tight and wouldn't fit the flash eliminators. The answer was to enlarge the hole in the crosspiece to (I think, .895") to ensure that it fitted. BUT, before you modified the ring, you had to ensure that the flash eliminator was round and not dented (caused by dropping on the floor of the Bedford trucks as they bounced along the crap roads and tracks) by testing it for concentricity with a special 'GAUGE, ring .890" - No5 rifle' There was an SM number for it, but I forget it now!
That's the answer if you have a tight one. Thanks for that timely reminder Aragorm that I've remembered from right at the back of the old memory banks

For current value, just search completed auctions on eBay to see what examples in similar condition to yours are bringing these days.
