Question Long Branch No.4 Rear Sight w Very Small Aperture ????

I will hopefully attach a picture of a LB sight with an unusually small aperture. Any ideas how this came about or what it might be for? I have it on Ebay closing Sunday 13 August. Thanks.

Very early rear sight. Will have two "rails" each side of the iris and be checkered..... They are not common anymore.

Correct for 1941 or very early 1942 Long Branch No.4 Mark I/I* production. Same applies to 1941 No.4's of Britishicon manufacture and North American examples. Very uncommonly seen nowadays. I have a "SM/41" marked example of this early sight on my BSA made rifle s/n 611 dated '41 on buttsocket.
