    7.62 Conversion

I picked up a Lee Enfield that is marked 7.62 dated 1968. It has a Ramline(I think) plastic stock. I was told it was an Indian conversion....just curious as to what I have...what else do you need to know. Barrel is a little rusty....I am working on that.

Forum members will need more information to give a precise answer. Pictures of the rifle are best showing serial numbers and markings.

If it is Indian and of 1968 manfacture it will be a rifle made for 7.62 rather than a conversion. The Indians commenced production of 7.62 Enfields in the early 60's and continued through to the mid 70's.

India still manufacture a sporting version of the Lee-Enfield in 8mm Ordnance Factory Board

If the rear sight is on the barrel, it was made in India.

Here are the pics. Looks like it has a ATI stock I added a Caldwell bi-pod and I want to add a scope. I am interested in a scout mount but for costs sake I might just go with a standard mount.

BTW, the barrel cleaned up well, I understand that it is not a conversion but a built from the ground up as a 308 NATO. It shoots OK but I have only tried some unknown mil-surplus stuff. I think I can get it to shoot a lot better once I work up some hand loads for it. I do need to find a magazine. This one is a bit loose and it doesn't feed smooth.

    Nice pics

Replacement 7.62 magazines are available in USAicon from .308 (7.62 mm) Magazine for the 7.62mm model 2A Enfield

RJW NZicon, Roger from Enfield Resource, has had success in improving the accuracy of a similar Indian 2A in 7.62. In his book he takes you through the process of bedding the barrel in a 1" carbon fibre tube. See pg 182, The 2012 Complete Book on Lee Enfield Accurizing. Even if you decide to restore your rifle back to as issued by refitting the original timber stock, forewood and handguards, Rogers book is an interesting read that will help you.

    Cheers

I am really leaning toward going more for the scout rifle concept. I will read up on those links but I am not interested in restoring the rifle to original. I hope to scope it though.
