proper cheek (chin) weld for Mosin Sniper rifle

With short buttstock and high scope axis I find it difficult to get a proper cheek/chin weld with this rifle. What's the trick. To get proper scope image I end up smacking my face with myright thumb everytime I fire.

I know the feeling.
The only optically correct thing to do is to move your head in and out until the view is as full as you can it. Which I believe you are already doing. Too close or too far, and you will see the field of view shrink. Once you have the optimimum distance, you must hold that for best optical consistency. This is important for scopes that do not have a parallax adjustment.

When I remember, I lay the thumb to the side, not across the neck. If I forget, the smack on the cheek reminds me. A nuisance, because the position where my cheek barely touches the thumb across the neck is the optimum position for the optics.

So you have the choice of cheek touching thumb and great consistency, or thumb alongside, and then you have to watch out that the the field is "full" very time you take aim.
If I can work out a 3rd alternative, I'll let you know!

Wear a padded shooting glove.

Make a wrap around the butt, like the leather pads used on Garand snipers, that leaves a "slot" in front for the thumb and raises the head to a more comfortable position.
