Tell me about this barrel (1965 Springfield 7.62mm)

This is on my 1943 Winchester M1icon Garand. It has a mix match set of parts but shoots better than I do. I placed the five x marks on the last five digits.

Well, deleting the "10457" from the drawing number isn't really any sort of help. That barrel drawing number indicates '65 manufacture, as the '66 drawing number for 7.62 barrels was 11686514.

Previous 7.62 barrels were modified with a bushing, and were originally standard manufacture .30-06 chambered barrels.

Thanks, did not realize what the 10457 number was and it seems most people remove numbers from such items before posting.

No sweat, I figured as much. Posting a firearm serial number is mostly dangerous if it's a stolen item. If the last 4-5 digits are obscured it will just make it impossible to know date of manufacture more accurately than plus/minus X number of months.

Obscuring the number of a legally owned firearm doesn't help the cause. It's so refreshing to see a whole number so you can actually help the OP with his identification.

Since it was not the serial number I guess it did not matter? Is there a way to tell if this was an AMF or an H&R barrel job? Also, this does not appear to have a bushing? Does anyone have a link to an image of one? I thought only the MK2 MOD 0 rifles were available through the CMPicon. If so how did the MK2 MOD1 rifles show up for sale? I realize my rifle may just be a copy but I am curious about the history of the Navy rifles.

The barrels with bushings were converted from D6535448 .30 caliber barrels. Yours was originally manufactured in 7.62x51 MM.

If your rifle was rebarreled with a 7.62mm tube at H&R or AMF it would be stamped in the chamber area with large letterring, H&R or AMF. Rifles rebarreled by the Navy or a private person that aquired a 7.62mm barrel would not have added any extra stamps.

    Navies

The Fall 2012 GCAicon Journal that is at the printer now will feature the complete story of these conversions. A team of five GCA guys examined over 1800 of them and recorded the details.

Bob, thanks. That was my next question, "when will the issue be available". I look forward to reading it.
