    M1 Garand Serial Number

    Hello;
    Can you tell from the Serial Number on an M1 Garand to which branch of the service it
    was issued. Example, this block of #` issued to the U.S.iconArmy, another block of #`s
    issued to the U.S. Marine Corps, Etc.. I have a very low #`ed S.A. Garand,wondering about
    its history.. Thanks, Phil.

    A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. There are some documents about the issue of the earliest M1s, but not much. For example, the 29th ID got the first batch after the Infantry School at Benning. After about 10,000, however, there isn't any info. I have records of 4-digit guns returned to SA for repair from various forts, like 2417 and 2428 returned from Ft. Sam Houston. You would have to look up what units were there in 1938 to identify who got those guns.
