A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. I for one never got to the bottom of the larger/small aperture battle sight. The same applied to the No4 backsights. From the purely practical point of view, then the large aperture was far better for use in the dark jungle environment. Can you enlighten us on this Nigel/Ensci?

There's also the different lengths of thread on the adjustment screw too. Short length (as in 3rd rifle) for No5 and long thread length (1st rifle) interchangeable between both No4 and 5
