    Mosin Nagant 91/30 problem

I don't know if this is the right forum, but here goes. My ex-son-in-law left his 1943 91/30 with me when he moved to another state. He won't get it back because of mental problems now, but that's another subject. Anyway, we shot his and my M-N rifles a couple of years ago (I also have a 1943 from a different factory). I advised him how to clean it when we finished and sort of watched while I was cleaning mine. These guns were put up in gun sacks (not plastic) last year while I went to WV to babysit four of my grandkids while my daughter was deployed overseas with the Army. Anyway, she got back and I got back to Texas and pulled my guns down and checked them over. Mine were all slightly oily and clean. I ran a patch through each of them. They were clean. I ran a patch through his and it came out rusty!! I put Hoppes #9 on a brush and ran it through a couple of times and it came out rusty.. More patches, with more cleaner and more rust. I plugged the muzzle as best I could with a bolt and piece of plastic bag and left it to soak overnight with Kroil poured down the breach. I need some suggestions, please. Anyone run into a rusty bore and had to clean it? I really don't like to have my guns neglected. Thanks.

    Dave

It's kinda rough looking treatment, but "ChoreBoy" wrapped around a brush works well. Best reserved for severe cases, but usually it doesn't hurt accuracy much afterwards. Regardless, there's plenty of scrubbing to do. Be sure to use a water based cleaner at some point to wash out the remaining salt that started the rusting.

This is probably the most important advice. Get the salts out. I'm a "quart of hot water" fan myself.

I would give Hoppe's (or your favorite commercial bore cleaner) some soak time and some serious passes with a brass brush a good chance before doing anything drastic. The brush is about the same material as the Chore Boy only shaped better for a barrel. If the brush doesn't work then think about ramping up to more determined treatment.

I would bet it will be OK even if it isn't great.

Dollar Tree in this area has steel wool and Core Boy grade scrubbers in 12 packs. They are cylinder shaped about half the size of an SOS pad. Perfect for almost any weapon cleaning chore.

Using hot water and detergent is probably one of the hardest things for a gun guy to overcome. With corrosive ammo it is essential though. I learned this many years ago on black powder weapons.
