    I guess they never suffered from many oil leaks JM, that section of Crankcase has its fair share of bolts/studs, any history behind it ? is that battle damage on the side casing and rocker cover or just missuse ?

    Recovered from the, at the time. freshly dissolved USSR. Not so much battle damage but rather mostly bored Russians. Having seen wadded up P39 wreckage, the engine would be the last thing to take impact damage. Pilot's compartment is well protected ,too, more than is needed, probably.
