The "New" Surplus Rifles of NOW.

Went to a gun show today for the first time in months. Russianicon Nagants have all but dried up. The new surplus rifles appear to be the Chinese type 53 and Chinese SKS's and boy do they look awful. Long rows of bad looking rifles on several tables. $130 for the 53's, didn't pay attention to the SkS's. They were missing cleaning rods, stocks are beat all up, the SKS's looked like they had some sort of growth on them. They were selling. The dealer was using the "Russion M44's are bringing $275 now so get these while they are cheap"

A few beat up Steyr Carbines were also available, looks like they hit the bottom of the barrel with these.

I'd love the opportunity to pay $130 for a Type 53. They're very, very uncommon here.

I did think about picking one up briefly. Not exactly in my timeframe of WWI and WWII. The metal on the 53's wasn't all that bad and the Chinese characters were interesting. The stocks could be made to look nicer too with some linseed oilicon. They did have their bayonets, just not the cleaning rods. Only a couple had them. Guy was trying to mix and match a cleaning rod to another rifle and the seller left him do it but wouldn't let anyone else do it.

Chris Goodwin has M44s on sale live for £150 in perfect condition 1945 dated.
If you are buying an SKS, Russianicon stamped parts got sold/transferred to the Chinese circa 1952. In my view the Russian version is better made. Zastiva in Yugoslaviaicon also made a version of the SKS fitted with a grenade sight!
Has a nice find for a friend last week. Bought a D/A,1938, laminated stock, long barrel Mosin Nagant rifle for £185.00 with a new sling and matching number bayonet. Both Ishmash made ( apologies for not reading and writing Russian correctly) Triangle containing an arrow stampings.
    Kind regards, Lester
