Type 99 Series 1, matching with mum, AA sites

Hello,

This is my most recent buy, a Nagoya series 1 Type 99. Made around 1939 or 1940? All of the numbers match and the mum is present and untouched. Also, it still retains the AA sites. The bore is very bright and the rifling is sharp. What are your opinions on the bolt face? Do you think it has been cleaned or just not fired much? For purposes of illustrating how much better the finish is on my new one, I photographed it next to my older one. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

It looks like it's been well maintained. Nice looker. The sights could use a bit of cleaning to prevent the rust from getting worse. It looks like they may not be original to the rifle. They are not in as nice a condition and the screw heads look damaged.

That is a very nice T99 there. The finish is nice and dark, it is a beauty! I don't think it was shot much by the bolt face.

Thank you both for the input! This did stand out to me as much darker/retaining more metal finish than the vast majority of worn Arisakas that I see. Bill, you think that the bolt face exhibits actual wear? The bore is really excellent so I didn't think it had been fired much, but the bolt face seemed almost too clean. What are some recommendations regarding cleaning the sight?

The bolt faces on the early rifles are often chromed like the bores. So that one is likely fine. Round count? Hard to say.

Doesn't look like it needs much, try wiping it down with oil first to see if it's just crud. Then nothing more than a fine steel wool if it's rust and not crud.

Awesome rifle! The bolt face looks just like several that I have. I really like the T99s plated bolt face and bore. You scored on that one. It is getting near impossible to find an unmolested T99 with a mum and matching nos. Are the trigger gaurd screws still staked? Extra points if they are--Salt Flat

Try brass wool instead of steel wool. I find it's much less likely to remove blueing, and there are no small pieces of steel left around to rust.

I'm not sure about the screws, they look to have been turned to me. Any ideas on a more exact production date of this one? Thanks for all of the replies.
