Those marks can hardly be accidental dings - they are all in a sheltered area, where accidental contact is unlikely, and the numbering areas do not show any other marks that look like dings. I therefore conclude that they are deliberate.
Japanese inspector's marks?

I agree that they're deliberate. Could they be a number? Production year? I doubt it but they look incomplete. I can't even make a whole shape out of them.

Why is it we know so little about Japanese Rifles. No one can say for sure why the mums were ground off or at least who ordered it or why. Perhaps there are books in Japanese that have never been translated. I can't imagine a nation not having some interest in their rifles. There are thousands of books on their warships so the militarism shouldn't be an issue.

If they are inspectors' marks, would rifles close in production (series, serial number, manufacturer) possibly have the same markings in question as each other? I know it is a long shot, but if there are any that fit this description, we might learn something. However, just as easily there could have been 10 or more different inspectors with their own unique marks at any given time. Just a thought, especially if anyone has rifles they know to be close in production to others. Also, do other Types (38, 44, 2, etc) have these marks?

Help! - I've got one as well
On a T38. Looks like a squarish 6 (think of a rough box with a acute accent on it). I shall have to improve my photography skills to get a photo. But it's a stamp all right!
Will post photo later if I can produce something useful.
Moderator HELP please !
I cannot upload pics, using the same camera etc as always. Is there a software bug, or have I already uploaded too many photos? Files are not too large. But not even a 76KB jpg file will upload. I get a message "upload failed".

Data Sheet for Model 99 Rifles
Check out page 2, the box where it diagrams the receiver directly beneath the full rifle diagram. #7 points to the mark in question and says "Final Inspection Mark." Directly to the left of that box is another box with the "Supervisory and/or Inspection Marks," the possible markings for that location. Do any of these look familiar to the marks on your rifles?

Patrick: Keep in mind, the data sheet I just posted says it's for Type 99, so you may or may not find the marking you mentioned earlier on there.
Also, in general, there are probably more not pictured on that sheet because I cannot seem to find the one on my T99 (serial number 999), but who knows how accurately they were stamped compared to the pictures. The mark on my T99 serial number 8955 looks like the pictured marking C, but like I said, very hard to say for sure. At least we know they are final inspection marks.
