RANGE REPORT: Original Inland and Standard Products mix-master

Stopped by the Spenceville DF&G range today to try "Iwo" (original Inland) and "Blondie" (mix-master with birch stock) at distance. Prior to this I just did battle sight at 25 yards to check sights, and some slightly longer distances off-hand.

Shooting was done both off hand standing and sitting leaning on a park bench. Ammunition was Remington 110 FMJ

Inland with flip sights: 6 o'clock hold on target 50 yards and 100 yards. Free standing, I hit everything I shot at at 50 and 90% at 100. Targets were tin cans, 2 liter bottles, and assorted junk on the range. From the bench, using the same 6 o'clock hold I hit EVERYTHING I aimed at at 100 yards. The rear flip sight was perfect for lateral placement on the target at 100 yards. VERY COOL!

Standard Products: exactly the same results as the Inland. I also did a couple 2 liters at 150-200 and hit them from the bench, adjusting the rear sight elevation accordingly. Both seemed to have perfectly regulated sights, which is not too surprising considering how well they did on the 25 yard sight in. It just felt handier with its slightly beefier M2 stock (even though most of the "pot belly" was sanded off), and seemed to point better and have better target acquisition than the flip sight Inland with slimmer stock.

The Standard Products still functioned 100%reliably with both 15 and 30 round magazines.

The Inland, on the other hand, had a problem. It has functioned perfectly with 30 rounders before, but today, I had 2 FTFs from USGI 15s! It was a short stroke, where the bolt did not travel far enough to the rear to allow the round to come up. It was two different 15 rounders, and both time it was the 11th round.... Maybe my piston id too tight from carbon. I had to free it up before I shot it after I first bought it. Maybe It has residual carbon.

Overall impressions. While the un-messed Inland was a hoot to shoot (with me thinking of my dad shooting his identical Inland on Iwo Jima 67 years ago), the real "show pony" was the Standard Products. The later stock, later sights, and the Type III band were all improvements that were introduced for a reason. Once again it was borne out that later ones just seem to shoot better. I am confident that I could easily tag a ghoul or goblin at 200 yards with no trouble, even if I just had head and shoulders visible. I do not feel under-gunned at all using it as a patrol carbine.
