1942 Savage

I picked up this 1942 Savage. It was dirty but in good shape. All parts I can see have the s mark so looks to be correct Savage. Has the ishy screw and FR stamped in the buttstock so my guess lend lease to India. No import marks so pre 68 import or bring back. No other accepance marks just the Savage marks and flaming bomb markings. Bore is bright and shiney. What do you all think. Also what to look for? I plan to tear this one down and clean the crud out of it. I don't plan to refinnish it just clean the dirt and put BLO on the wood.

Nice Savage. I have a '43 with an "ishy screw", no import stamp, and FR stamped on the buttstock (although in a different font). There seems to be some slight controversy about whether the "FR" rifles did time in India, no one seems to know what it really means.

In our book of markings that used to be available in the big workshop Armourers shops in the 60's, FR was a base workshop standard repair done at a factory. This was a means of keeping the workforce employed during slack production times. BUT it was not a FTR programme where every part is subject to an 'as-new' examination.

So FTR is Factory THOROUGH repair
FR is repair done at a factory to Base Workshop standard

We know that some of the markings have since been found to be incorrect especially relating to SMG's in foreign armies. (Nepal and Kenya seems to ring a bell.....). But generally speaking, the rifle info was all OK

Clash77 Nice 1943 Savage. In your post you said your has Crown markings on the receiver ring and bolt. I looked in your pictures looking for pictures of those because I want to see where they are and what they look like. I havent seen Crown markings on mine so I dont know what country accepted it. The finninsh on yours is the same as mine.

Mr. Laidler do you think the FR work was done in the UK or whatever country had these rifles? Looks to me like they added the transverse screw in the stock and stamped FR in the buttstock. I looked in the places for inspectors marks like Crown markings and have not found any. No Indian inspector marks either. Just the flaming bomb. Last my rifle has no proof marks you see on the end of the barrel when it was sold out of service. No England stamp. Off topic I had a 68MG.

I'm not gonna ask about the other thing you all mentioned but will say I do listen and like to learn espically from people who worked on these rifles.
