Most were found on Plainfields. They are a commercial clone. NO GI handguards were made that way.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

A few years back I saw a ventilated carbine handguard on EBAY, It was being sold as a "rare metal handguard used in Vietnam, only by US Special Forces!" The price was ridiculous, and I don't think it sold. I sent the seller a message trying to straighten him up, but he did not respond.

Could be wrong but in the film "The Eagle has Landed" all the American troops had carbines with those handguards. Good for a laugh.

I don't know why the USG stuck with wood. I find the ventilated steel handgaurds are actually quite functional. They don't split or char, they tolerate water and heat very well. The barrel can become surprisingly hot to the touch, even after just a few bursts. My special Saginaw wears a stainless steel one (made for Iver Johnson). No endless agonizing either over the benefits of RLO versus BLO
