Help,

I have a Springfield M1 Garand with original strap excellent condition.
* Serial number on the rifle is 321586 with bill of sale M1Grand National Match
* Barrel number LMRd8535448-1 53 A7
* Activator number 7790722SA 3K-641-42
* Internat Harvester Sin number 4641942
* Rifle caliber 1005-00-674-1425
* CDR Anniston Army Depot Government of US weapon serial number 5417421

When Springfield made this rifle do all the serial numbers have to match?
Does this rifle have serial numbers\ based on the parts to build it and identify each piece?

The only serial number is the first one, the one on the receiver. The rest are drawing numbers. The parts would have originally been Springfield manufacture and have through re-build been changed to other manufacture. That's normal for a rifle that was made before WW2 actually gained steam. The AA marking attests to that fact. The rifle caliber should be Cal .30, not the 13 digit number you have there. That's a federal stock number of some description. The International Harvester number is for another rifle. There is no "activator" number. You have a very confusing post. Maybe you could post some pics of the rifle, clear and up close and we can tell you more about it.

Yes, please Annette, some clarification is in order. Plus pics would be very great in helping to identify just what you have there, including a pic of the paperwork to see what info is there as well. Not 100% necessary, but pics are very good about telling what you want to find out.... Just make sure they are as in focus as possible. It's best to take the pics outside on a cloudy day, or at least out of the bright direct sunlight.

There were several manufacturers of the M1 rifle: Springfield Armory, Winchester, Harrington & Richardson Arms, & International Harvester Corporation. Some of the parts were made by these companies, some by contractors. The "manufacturer" of any of these is considered the manufacturer of the receiver; that is the name just behind the rear sight (with the serial number). In your case, that would be International Harvester. IHC used some barrels made by Line Material Co, hence the code LMR on the barrel.

As Jim says, photos would be a big help, especially photos of the paperwork. If the serial number on paperwork does not match that of the rifle, the papers are for a different rifle. The part that you call an activator is what we would call an operating rod; those with that drawing number were used on National Match rifles. It's possible that you have a valuable rifle, so it is worth your time to accurately identify it.

GOOD NEWS and BAD NEWS
First the bad news - I doubt very much you have a N.M. rifle. I would guess the paperwork is for another rifle, maybe 5417421, more likly as it would be a SA.

The Good news - Looks like you have a "GAP LOGO" IHC rifle which would be worth quite a bit more than a regular "postage stamp" logo.

I guess you have no idea what I am talking about but, as others have said, post some good pictures, including the stock, especially is you see some numbers stamped in the wood inside the barrel channel and all parts that have numbers or letters and I am sure your questions will be answered.

Not if the rifle number is 321586 SA she doesn't...and I do know what you're talking about. But what I can see is there's at least three serial numbers included in that post. Plus one federal stock number for the rifle it's self...waiting...

Jim, I know that you "know what I am talking about", I was directing that comment to Annette. It is pretty obvious by her post that she is not up on the M1 rifle. After I wrote my comments regarding "GAP LOGO" and "postage stamp", I realized that what I am saying is most likely all Greek to her.
She does say "* Internat Harvester Sin number 4641942" I think the only place she would see "International Harvester" spelt out would be on the receiver and 4641942 is in the GAP LOGO serial number range. Just my thought at this point. I know with all the numbers she gave there are other possibilities. Hopefully she will post some pictures and we can have a positive answer for her.
