Unit disc IDF

Does this unit disc marking sound familiar to anyone? It has 589 on top and IDF below. Sorry, cant post pics from my Iphone for some reason. Anyway,I'm trying to locate a copy of Peters book he compiled on identifying unit discs but thought I'd ask first.

Best to post a photo - often there are clues in the age and font of the script.

There are thousands of unidentified butt disk marks, or those that could be read in many different ways. E.g. yours could be a rack number - "589" - and a unit that might be "something" defence force. Generally speaking, army rack numbers usually only go up to 120 or so - the size of a large infantry company or other sub-unit - whereas high rack numbers indicate a large pool of weapons - maybe a police force, game ranger force, training establishment, etc.

The type of rifle can also be a clue. E.g. BSA made several large batches of commercial rifles for overseas customers, and some of these have well-known markings and configurations.

Without a picture, here's a wild guess - the "I" is a "1" and the unit is the 1st Battalion, Dublin Fusiliers.

Israeli Defence Force?

Israel doesn't sound likely to me. It's a 1914 BSA still in mk3 configuration : volley, windage, cutoff, ect. Barrel is original and markings and proofs seem to be of time of manufacture, no later proofs or property markings so I believe the disc is pretty old, but I haven't found any matching abbreviations anywhere.
