Carbine accessory

I recently purchased an M-1 Carbine and with it came an attachment that I never heard of or seen before. It is a (roughly) rectangular shaped piece of metal attached to two rods and it fits over the frame/bridge behind the bolt. When in place it acts as a deflector for fired cases that are being ejected. Is this an after market item or was it developed by government and issued as a standard item intended to be used with every carbine. It works fine and keeps the spent casings from flying in all directions, but it does get in the way if trying to use stripper clips. Was I fortunate to have gotten it with the rifle or is it a hard to find item. Thanks for any info. J. Cooper

It is a brass deflector. IIRC, it was to be used with M3 sniper scopes to protect the tube. I could be wrong, but that is what I heard a long time ago. Maybe Bill knows.

It's a deflector that may have been designed for use with the late scoped carbines. I have also seen them packaged with blank adapters. Funny thing is, the U.S. never issued blank adapters. I understand that the ones you find are all non-G.I. Even funnier, I have no idea why you would need the brass deflector just because you're shooting blanks. I have shot blanks using one of those adapters and it came with a deflector. I tried it but it was no problem without it. I used the blank adapter on June 6, 1994 in the reenactment of D-Day at Virginia Beach. I'm not a reenactor but got talked into it. So I did it once and that was plenty. I liked playing Army as a kid, but as an adult, it seemed inane. I went along with it though, because after all there were thousands of spectators there not to mention the 'Germans', who were great! For example, I was 'pinned down' behind something and was firing around it. I rolled over to get a mag out and reload, when a 'medic' comes running over and says 'Are you hit?' to which I replied 'Hell, no, I'm just trying to reload!'. Poor guy was just playing the part. Funny, I couldn't even hear the carbine firing, because the Garand guys were using hi-power blanks that needed no adapter. I thought at the time that was excessively dangerous - people do make mistakes. Well, the Germans were doing the same thing, including the MG42s, so I guess it was okay.

A vendor at the Portland gun shows has these and told me they are Dutch and used with their BFA's. He said the blank shell casings sometimes eject different than standard ammo and the purpose is to prevent the operator from receiving burns from the hot brass. - Bob

PS. The OP seems to imply that you can use stripper clips to reload with the magazine in the carbine. I never thought of trying that - can you?

It is, as said, a brass deflector - for the West German blank adapter. It is made for the later adjustable rear sight, will not work with the early flip sight. Has Nothing to do with the M3 snooper scope. Both the German black plastik blanks and the Norwegian red plastik blanks tended to spit gas/burning powder residue back into the shooters face, thus the shield. The red blanks were the worst of the 2.
If you save your fired cases it is a very handi gadget to have as it dorps the cases almost at your feet.
